Festival Blues y Jazz en la Libélula Dorada

El año comienza con una gran noticia para el blues y el jazz bogotanos: la convocatoria para el Festival de Jazz y Blues de la Libélula Dorada, evento que se viene realizando desde 1997, y que en 2009 tendrá lugar del 15 de abril al 30 de mayo.

Allí se ha contado con músicos y bandas que, hoy por hoy, tienen gran trayectoria dentro de estos géneros musicales en la capital. Igualmente ha contado con artistas de otras ciudades colombianas y hasta extranjeros.

Los interesados en participar deben enviar en un sobre de manila la siguiente información, tanto impresa como en medio magnético:

- Trayectoria del grupo

- Breve reseña de cada integrante.

- Repertorio del concierto (mínimo 1 hora máximo 2 horas), que incluya nombres de los temas y sus autores.

- Demo 5 canciones incluidas en el repertorio.

- 3 fotografías en formato JPG, 300 dpi c/una ó las originales.

El sobre debe indicar claramente el nombre del grupo, el género a interpretar (blues o jazz) e información de contacto de dos de sus integrantes (teléfono fijo, celular, correo electrónico).

Este material se debe hacer llegar antes del 28 de febrero a la sede del Teatro Libélula Dorada, ubicada en la carrera 19 #  51 – 69, Bogotá.

Poderoso Powers

El pasado 23 de julio tuvimos la oportunidad de tener en Bogotá al guitarrista Michael Powers en su primera visita a Suramérica. Fue realmente un gran honor tenerlo poder conversar con él, lo hice unos días antes vía telefónica en mi programa de radio, y luego observarlo sobre el escenario del Teatro Libre de Chapinero.Fue una noche mágica. Hacía mucho tiempo, más de 10 años, que en el Libre no se escuchaban las notas del blues. Black Cat Bone, grupo bogotano, se encargó de abrir el telón. Tocó cerca de una hora, mostrando algo de su faceta blusera en medio de su ya reconocido sonido rockero. La verdad, no defraudaron. Interpretaron algunas canciones de su único álbum y nos ofrecieron algo de su nuevo repertorio, que va a lograr que la banda se posicione mucho más dentro de la afición rockera capitalina. Es bueno que piensen también en ofrecer su música al exterior.

Luego vino lo que todos estábamos esperando: Michel Powers. Comenzó con un extenso tema acústico, en el cual nos paseo por todo lo que ha sido este estilo blusero, con muchos toques del blues del Delta, evocando a los grandes Charley Patton y Robert Johnson, hasta algo del melódico country blues que, inmediatamente, me hizo recordar al gran Big Bill Broonzy. Después entró su banda, integrada por el bajista Pinky Méndez y el baterista Barry Harrison.

Por algo más de tres horas Powers nos deleitó con su estilo, mezcla de todas las influencias que lo han marcado: Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker. Realmente es un artista camaleónico, capaz de cambiar de estilo en cada canción, algo que se puede notar también en sus tres producciones musicales, de las cuales sólo he escuchado dos pero de las que puedo hablar muy bien, la primera “Onyx Roots”, muy acústica, muy personal, pero con mucha fuerza; la segunda, “Prodigal Son”, inclinada hacia el blues rock. Y así fue el concierto en general, una atmósfera muy cerrada, muy íntima, mostrando todo el poder de Micahel Powers.

Al final, qué más se podía pedir. The Black Cat Bone subió al escenario y en un par de temas acompañó a Powers, un jam que se había concertado el sábado anterior en el programa de radio, en el cual estuvieron presentes los integrantes del grupo bogotano charlando con Michael Powers.

Realmente fue un lanzamiento digno del festival de blues que se piensa realizar en noviembre de este año, Blues D.C. arrancó con pie derecho y con mucho poder.

El próximo 23 de julio, en el Teatro Libre, se presentará el guitarrista Michael Powers, exponente de larga tradición del blues, conocido por su trabajo en el siglo pasado con The Ad Lips y ahora como solista. Tiene su base en Nueva York, donde está considerado como uno de los grandes de la escena. Como telonero de esta presentación estará The Black Cat Bone.

Este fin de semana tenemos un programa variado, el sábado, con bastante blues clásico, aunque algunos artistas -como Paul deLay o Charlie MUsselwhite- son considerados todavía como parte del movimiento del blues contemporáneo, aunque ya son todas unas leyendas del género. El domingo, The Legendary Rhtyhm and Blues Revue con su álbum “Command Performance”, cuya reseña ya han leído arriba.
